THINGS TO DO IN NICE
The best places to visit and highlights in Nice and in the area!
1) Promenade des Anglais
It's impossible to talk about Nice without mentioning the famous Promenade des Anglais which you can see from the apartment. Formerly a favourite resort for English tourists during winter months, it's today the best known tourist attraction of the city.
This world-famous 7km promenade runs from the Castle Hill (La colline du Château in French) to Nice airport.

2) Old Town
Another must see in Nice is its old town with its shady alleyways, colourful facades and typically Mediterranean shutters. It's impossible to talk about Nice Old Town (le Vieux Nice) without mentioning the Cours Saleya, where the famous market and flower market is held almost every morning (except on Monday).
On Monday morning, the Cours Saleya becomes a big open-air flea market! It's also the ideal place to have a drink or eat something at one of the many terrace bars and restaurants.

3) Massena square
Massena square (Place Masséna) is the main square of the city. Since its construction, it has always been the spot for great public events. It is used for concerts, and particularly during the summer festivals, the carnival parade in February and the military procession of 14 July (Bastille Day).
From Massena square, you can return to the apartment through the pedestrian streets: rue Masséna and rue de France.

4) Castle Hill with its fantastic views
The Castle Hill park (le parc de la Colline du Château) is located on the hill overlooking Nice Old Town. It owes its name to the military fortress that overlooked the bay of Nice from the 11th to the 18th century. The main interests of this park are the stunning viewpoints it offers over the city, the Bay of Angels (Baie des Anges), the harbour and the mountains.
You can walk up and down to the castle on foot or use the elevator. Another option is to take the Nice mini-train tour (the departure point is on the Promenade des Anglais, in front of the centenary monument of the Jardin Albert 1er park).

5) The Old Port of Nice
The Old Port of Nice is actually called Port Lympia. It is composed of commercial and pleasure wharves. Don't miss the traditional coloured boats drawing a real postcard landscape on the eastern quay. Try to go in mid-afternoon when the sun's golden rays fill the port with colour. Around the port you will find many cafes and restaurants.
6) Nice Russian Orthodox Cathedral
A listed historical monument located northwest of the railway station, it is the most important Orthodox religious building outside Russia.
7) Nice Carnival
Nice Carnival, the largest carnival in France and one of the world's most famous, takes place every February for 2 weeks. The festivities attract several hundred thousand spectators, coming to enjoy the monumental floats and the flower parade (also called flower "battle") on the Promenade des Anglais.
8) Nice Le Grand Tour
Visit Nice and Villefranche-sur-Mer from the top of an open-deck bus. It will take you through most of the places described above. This original means of transportation, combined with tours with commentary in 9 languages, offers the possibility of getting on and off the bus freely at any stop.

WALKS
1) Nice coastal Walk
This lesser-known coastal path allows you to walk from the apartment to Villefranche-sur-Mer. It officially starts at Coco beach but if you like walking you could start directly from the apartment. Walk eastwards along the Promenade towards the old town and around the port. When you reach Coco beach, follow the official coastal path (sentier du littoral) until you reach Villefranche, where you can visit its port, the citadel and the old town. There you will also find many restaurants and bars.
Note that before Maeterlinck Palace (Palais Maeterlinck) you will need to take the steps after a cubic shaped building (see picture and map) leading up to the main road. Walk along it for a few minutes to bypass the cliffs and palace before going back to the coastal path.
In some places the path is uneven so wear proper shoes. Trainers are fine but avoid flip-flops.
There are numerous places to have a swim along the coastal path as well as in Villefranche so don't forget your swimming outfits.
Allow 3 hours one-way from the apartment. To get back to Nice, take bus #100 or #15 or the train in Villefranche-sur-Mer.

2) Tour of Cap-Ferrat
This walk goes around Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, a former fishing village located in the heart of the Côte d'Azur, between Nice and Monaco.
The starting point is right at the port of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat where you can have lunch before or after the walk. Take avenue Claude Vignon, then take the chemin de la Carrière and then simply follow the well-trodden footpath along the coastline until you reach Passable beach (Plage de Passable) before ending the loop back at the village.
From the village you can either catch bus #15 to go back to Nice or walk along the fully tarmacked promenade Maurice Rouvier (30mn) going through David Niven square (place David Niven), where the actor lived, to go to Beaulieu-sur-Mer where you can take bus #100 or #15 or the train back to Nice. While you're in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, you might want to visit Villa Rothschild (see "Day Trips" below).
In some places the path is uneven so wear proper shoes. Trainers are fine but avoid flip-flops.
Allow about 2 hours for the walk itself.
St Jean Cap Ferrat is reached by bus #15 from the port in Nice. Get off at the last stop ("Port de Saint-Jean").

DAY TRIPS
Monaco / Monte Carlo (1/2 day – 1 day)
Squeezed into just 200 hectares (2.8 sq km), this tiny principality is the world's second-smallest country: only the Vatican is smaller. It's well worth a visit for its old town and casino. You can get to Monaco (and Monte Carlo) directly from Nice by train, by bus (line #100 from Nice port) or even by boat (see below).
Eze Village (1/2 day)
A lovely day trip into a medieval city full of beautiful vistas and shops. You can take the train from Nice station to Eze station and then connect to bus #83 up to Eze Village. You can also combine this with another 1/2 day trip to see Monaco/Monte Carlo in the morning and Eze in the afternoon for example (the train to Monaco from Nice stops at Eze station).
Saint Paul de Vence (1 day)
Another wonderful day trip from Nice is the lovely perched village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence (not to be confused with "Vence" which is nearby): one of the most picturesque on the Riviera. Catch the train to Cagnes-sur-Mer (15mn) and then take bus #400, which will take you straight to Saint Paul de Vence.
Haut de Cagnes (1/2 day)
The small medieval village of Haut-de-Cagnes, situated at the summit of the castle hill, rises over the modern town below. You can stroll around the winding streets, visit the St Peter and St Paul ("St Pierre et St Paul") church before a look in the castle museum; all the time enjoying the spectacular views over the mountains and sea. Catch the train to Cagnes-sur-Mer (15mn) and then either walk to Haut-de-Cagnes (30mn) or catch the free shuttle at "Square Bourdet".
Grasse (1 day)
The French perfume industry began in Grasse in the 16th century and is still present today. Don’t miss a free guided visit of one of the principal "parfumeries", which also house their own small but interesting museums. Grasse’s well-preserved old town ("vieille ville") is also worth exploring. Self-guided tours are available from the Tourist Office.

Antibes (1 day)
Great and easy day trip by train from Nice. Antibes is a resort town between Cannes and Nice on the French Riviera. It's known for its old town enclosed by 16th-century ramparts and the star-shaped Fort Carré overlooking luxury yachts moored at the Port Vauban marina.

Villa Kérylos (1/2 day)
Located on the rocky tip of the Baie des Fourmis in Beaulieu-sur-Mer, behind which stand the monumental cliffs of Eze, Villa Kérylos takes you on a fascinating journey and a tribute to Greek civilisation. An original reconstruction of an ancient Greek dwelling, Villa Kérylos is the realisation of a dream – that of Théodore Reinach, an archaeologist and French statesman, fascinated by Greek civilisation.
Catch bus #100 or #15 from the port in Nice and get off at bus stop "Kérylos" or catch the train to "Beaulieu sur mer".
Allow about 2 hours for the visit.

Other day trip (1 day)
This trip was suggested by a guest - remember your passport! Take bus #100 (at Nice port) to Monaco. Get off at stop "Monte Carlo" and walk down through the casino gardens to Monaco tourist office, where you can have your passport stamped. Then browse the 3 floors of high end shopping in the underground mall before utilising the photo opportunity at the end of gardens in front of casino with some of extremely high-end cars. After lunch walk uphill to Monaco railway station and take the commuter train to Ventimiglia ("Vintimille"), Italy (about 30 minutes). Walk downhill from the station to beach and promenade, where you can have dinner overlooking the sea. Return to "Nice Ville" station via the train.

Monaco by boat
It's worth visiting Monaco while you're on the French riviera so why not go there by boat from Nice? It takes about an hour. You can also go to Monaco by bus (30 minutes) or train (about 15mn) but by boat it's more fun.

Go to the cinema
Most mainstream multiplexes in Nice usually show their Hollywood blockbusters dubbed in French, but two of them, the Cinema Variétés and the Pathé Massena are now showing more and more of their films in the original language; just look for V.O. (meaning Version Originale) written after the title.
The Rialto, just 5mn walk from the apartment, shows first-run films as well as indies, documentaries and art house films in their original language.
